North Dallas Thirty Got Creationism in Biology Classes

February 25, 2005

Blogger comrad and sometimes opponent North Dallas Thirty comments:

You'd be surprised, Lloydletta. I got both creationism and evolution taught to me in biology classes in grade school and high school, and still aced the AP biology test. Indeed, I ultimately ended up majoring in it in college.

Creationism and evolution are not incompatible -- it just takes a bit of harmonization. What you may be thinking of is deterministic creation, which is that God created the world as-is, no changes. This is why they believe dinosaur fossils are the work of the devil, because God would never let one of His perfect creations die off.

I'm glad you recognize the difference. Just don't make a ridiculous deal out of Bachmann's actions.

Where did you go to school, NDT? I'm really interested in knowing more about this.

Shooting Themselves in the Foot

February 22, 2005

aarp.gif

This is the ad the AARP competitor is using on the American Spectator website. This is what I sent President Bush.

Dear President Bush:

It's an ad for USA Next - the AARP competitor.

Lower right....

Plays right into the hands of the left. Check it out:

Aravosis is onto it, so is Digby...

Log Cabin Republicans has been speaking out publically in support of Bush's social security plan. Why have this issue get mixed in with anti-gay bigotry?

The Truth Truck certainly didn't seem to help with Republican campaigns in Minnesota.

I also sent a copy of this to Powerline Blog. "Hindrocket" went on record on Reliable sources this weekend, stating he didn't like the Gay Baiting used by the left in going after Fake News Reporter James Guckert aka Jeff Gannon. Well I hope he speaks up against the stupidity of trying to mix the Social Security message with the culture wars over gay people.

Crystal Meth, Unsafe Sex and New Drug Resistant HIV Strains

February 15, 2005

Both Christian Grantham and Gay Patriot West have been covering this story.

UPDATE: Andrew Sullivan weighs in.

This really seems like history is repeating itself. From the New York Times:

"Gay men do not have the right to spread a debilitating and often fatal disease," said Charles Kaiser, a historian and author of "The Gay Metropolis." "A person who is H.I.V.-positive has no more right to unprotected intercourse than he has the right to put a bullet through another person's head," he said.

While not endorsing specific strategies, even mainstream organizations like the Gay Men's Health Crisis support the idea of trying methods that would have been anathema a few years ago. "It makes a community stronger when we take care of ourselves," said Ana Oliveira, the organization's executive director, "and if that means that we have to be much more present and intervene with people who are doing this to themselves and others, then so be it."

For many others, however, even talk of such steps provokes hand-wringing. "We don't want public health vigilantes going out and taking matters into their own hands, particularly if it means breaching the confidentially and civil rights of people with H.I.V.," said Jon Givner, the director of the H.I.V. Project at the Lambda Legal Defense and Education Fund. "Frankly, I find it pretty scary."

This sounds like Randy Shilts's And the Band Played On all over again. The debate continues:

A more effective approach, he said, would involve gay organizations using traditional public health measures, such as more widespread screening and a partner-notification effort to track users of crystal meth who have been infected recently.

"Why would it not be possible to get them together to communicate to each other, and then to their sex partners, that lives are being put at risk by reckless behavior?" he asked. "I think there are ways to do interventions ethically, sensitively and compassionately. There's a huge window of opportunity between criminalization and empty prevention messages."

Still, others remain wary of such measures. Walt Odets, a clinical psychologist and the author of "In the Shadow of the Epidemic: Being HIV-Negative in the Age of AIDS," said he thought such intervention smacked of a witch hunt.

He and others said it would be more effective to try to identify the underlying causes of drug abuse and self-destructive behavior, including the difficulty of living in a society that rejects committed gay relationships while condemning homosexuals for having sex outside those relationships. Gay men, he said, are using methamphetamines as an anti-depressant.

This is nonsensical enabling of irresponsible - and potentially lethal - behavior. It's just the notion of celebrating sexual license, rather than escaping oppression. There are parts of gay male culture that do this.

Stephen Bennett - the Posterboy Ex-Gay - rather predictably is exploiting the situation:

As a former homosexual, Bennett has buried numerous lovers and friends in the ground who have died from AIDS. Bennett left the "gay" lifestyle in 1992 after 11 years. He is now married almost 12 years to his wife and the father of their two children.

"For years the Center for Disease Control has been warning Americans of the
increase in HIV infection, with homosexual male sex being the predominant
cause (upwards of 60% or more of all cases reported.) Yet even within such a
high risk group, homosexuals continue to engage in risky, deadly behavior.

While young 'gay' men are dying early deaths, the media, schools and state
governments continue to promote this deadly lifestyle. It was a miracle I
was never infected with HIV. No doubt, if I continued in my homosexual
lifestyle, I would probably be dead today myself," said Bennett.

Sexual irresponsibility is a problem - whether practiced by gays or straights. Ofcourse the Leviticus Crowd promotes the notion that "condoms don't work" in the "abstinence only" curriculum - this is also a lethal message. Condoms used properly do significantly reduce (though do not eliminate) HIV transmission.

Minnesota's Marilyn Musgrave Runs for Congress

February 14, 2005

That's Sen. Michele Bachmann - Minnesota's Marilyn Musgrave - or Arlon Lindner with good hair.

From the Coon Rapids Herald:

Bachmann also cited her anti-abortion stance and support for banning same-sex marriage - she sees the need for both federal and state constitutional amendments.

This letter was published in the Stillwater Gazette today:

To the Editor:

The state is over a billion dollars in the red. The governor has proposed that tens of thousands of Minnesotans be cut off from the bare minimum health care they can afford. College tuition is going through the roof. Twin Citians are spending more and more time on congested roadways and less and less time with their families. And more of our state's lakes, rivers and streams are polluted than ever before.

So what has our State Senator Michele Bachmann done so far this legislative session to improve the lives of her constituents in District 52?

Authored a resolution purporting to recognize Ronald Reagan’s birthday that was, instead, a thinly disguised piece of right-wing propaganda that would have made Joseph Goebbels proud.

  • Authored a bill to designate highway I-494/694 “Ronald Reagan Beltway,” and spend thousands of tax dollars erecting signs announcing that.
Authored a bill to make taking a free ride on the light-rail train a petty misdemeanor.

  • These are the priorities of Michele Bachmann. Wouldn’t it be nice if District 52 actually had someone representing us at the capitol, instead of a self-serving state senator who is using her office to grandstand her wayand her extremist agendato higher office?

  • Perhaps Bachmann should retire now and save us from further embarrassment so she can get on with her Congressional campaign legitimately, rather than have the taxpayers continue to subsidize it.

Gay Patriot Covers Gannon

February 09, 2005

Gay Patriot gets new digs..... architected by the talented Christian Grantham.

Here....

He may be the first conservative blogger to comment on the Jeff Gannon situation.

He also comments:

Let me make a final observations. The liberal blogs appear to be having a field day with this, but are ignoring the Eason Jordan story. It will be interesting to see how the conservative blogs deal with the Gannon issue.... if it develops as the liberal blogs seem to be suggesting.

One downside to the blogosphere seems to be further polarizing of news, facts, and in turn our political discourse. That's too bad.

You are so right Gay Patriot. And welcome to your new digs - they look much better than the old digs.

Checked some other conservative blogs. Nothing on Powerline, nothing on Michelle Malkin, Captain Ed, though they all are obsessing about the Eason Jordan story.... Glenn Reynolds bites and points to Rip N' Read. But Gay Patriot got to this before Glenn Reynolds/Instapundit.

Meanwhile Rep Louise Slaughter is calling for a congressional investigation.
