Conservative Chuck Muth on the Outings

September 16, 2004

I contributed to Chuck Muth when he started the Lawfully Wedded website which promotes conservative opposition to the Federal Marriage Amendment. As a contributor, I get his Goldwater List email update. In today's update, he discusses the outings.

"OUTING" OUT OF CONTROL

The homo-obsessed branch of the religious right appears to have really opened a Pandora’s box by making a constitutional ban on gay marriage its signature issue in this year’s campaigns. Backlash against Republicans, who have openly embraced the Federal Marriage Amendment, is resulting in a whole lotta "outing" going on.

Things got particularly nasty down in the Florida GOP primary race last month, where Mel Martinez, attempting to cash in on the anti-gay marriage bandwagon, accused his opponent, former congressman Bill McCollum, of advancing the "homosexual agenda" (maybe CBS can get its hands on this highly secret document; no one I know has ever seen it) and "outed" a McCollum consultant as gay during a press conference. This, reports Ron Gunzburger of Politics1, after several Martinez staffers were also "outed" by "some radical gay activists."

Is this really what we want our campaigns to be all about?

Well, like it or not, it's apparently too late to put the toothpaste back in the tube now. Gunzburger reports today that a "radical gay outing advocate" named Michael Rogers is trying to "out" other conservative Republicans, and is presently targeting Rep. David Dreier, California Republican. Dreier so far has refused to deny or confirm whether or not he’s a homosexual or a heterosexual.

But why should he? What the heck does it matter?

Rogers says his next "outing" target after Dreier will be a conservative U.S. senator from the south. In the meantime, Republicans are spreading the rumor that California Democrat Party Chairman Art Torres is gay. And all this comes on the heels of GOP Rep. Ed Schrock of Virginia announcing his retirement a couple weeks ago after he was "outed" as gay. Gunzburger concludes, "This is degenerating into a real nasty blood sport."

What a wonderful harvest we’ve reaped from the seeds of that Federal Marriage Amendment, huh?

Exactly. And I'm sure it will get nastier over time.
