If you've ever wondered what it would be like if gays actually did have their own island nation, you don't have to wonder anymore. If Australia is forced by the United Nations to recognize the Gay & Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands as an independent nation, it will be cramped quarters on the three square miles of island.
Gay and lesbian activists formed the “Gay & Lesbian Kingdom of the Coral Sea Islands” in June last year after the Australian government passed legislation banning same-sex marriage and stripping same-sex couples of civil rights. The activists are now working on a submission to present to the United Nations that will bring Australia before the International Court of Justice, in order to compel the country to recognize the new state as an independent nation, on the grounds that under the current laws of Australia its gay and lesbian citizens are an “oppressed people, ruled by an overseas colonial power (Australia) and therefore because the Coral Sea Islands are a colony/territory of Australia, inhabited exclusively by the Gay Tribe, by the laws of the United Nations and its charter the Gay Kingdom has the right to self determination.”
