The Rev. Arthur Archer sounds like so many people who defended segregation and anti-miscegenation laws with disingenuous babble.
Last week, the couple began to have second thoughts about their relocation plans. Walking on Columbus Avenue they encountered a banner affixed to St. Agnes Church that read "Defend Marriage Now! Join us in taking a stand for marriage and the family!" The banner, which bore the logo of the Family Institute of Connecticut, indicated that more than 80,000 have signed a "Defense of Marriage" petition.Smith said the banner was nothing short of anti-gay propaganda. "It is disingenuous for any mature church leader to assert that the words 'defend marriage' are anything but code for anti-gay political action," Smith said. The banner was taken down the day after a reporter from The Lyme Times called The Rev. Arthur Archer, pastor at St. Agnes, asking for a comment about the couple's complaint.
Rev. Archer said the couple was "reading something into it that was not there." He said the banner's purpose was to remind people that they should support legislation defining marriage as being between a man and a woman. Archer went on to say that homosexual "behavior is a thing that needs to be very carefully examined," and that, "It is a condition."
