The Indiana Democratic Party responded today to charges that a "gay-baiting" email was sent from their servers. But the response might have now taken the email in question from the realm of 'tasteless' to 'officially criminal.'
Terry Burns, Communications Director for the Indiana Democratic Party, responded to Outlet Radio over charges the email originated from their servers saying an internal investigation into the mail server logs resulted in the following:
"The e-mail was not sent by any member of the Indiana Democratic Party staff or anyone with Governor Kernan’s campaign. We don’t condone or endorse these type of tactics. With the technology available today, this e-mail could have come from anyone or anywhere."
Burns also added, "It disturbs me that this kind of stuff went out."
Burns has not said whether the Indiana Democratic Party alerted state and federal authorites to investigate his charges of illegal IP spoofing or hacking activity on their servers. There is also no response as to whether they've retained the logs for such an investigation.
Yahoo email, the source of the 'gay-baiting' email, is web-based and isn't logged by mail server logs. The sender's internal IP would be logged by outgoing webserver activity logs, and the webserver's IP would in turn appear in the email headers.
Earlier in the day, Indiana Democratic Party Chair Kip Tew responded to the story with the following:
"Who are you? What is your agenda? The Indiana Democratic Party strongly condemns bigotry in every form."
